Kwara Govt takes over land used by Saraki family in Ilorin

Dr Bukola Saraki

The Kwara State Government has taken over a piece
of land being used by the Saraki Family in Ilorin.
A release by the Chief Press Secretary to Kwara
Governor, Rafiu Ajakaiye said on Friday that a new
secretariat would be built on the land.
Ajakaiye said the land was originally meant for
Government Secretariat and parking space of the Civil
Service Clinic, but was unlawfully allocated to a
private firm, Asa Investments Limited, without any
record of payment to the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that part
of the land, situated beside the Civil Service Clinic, is
also right in front of late Dr Olusola Saraki’s
residence.
NAN also reports that the late Saraki built a house
and named it ‘Ile Arugbo’ (elderly peoples’ home).
According to the statement, no certificate of
occupancy was issued in favour of the firm.
The statement explained that the government has
now made provisions for the secretariat in the 2020
budget, although its construction will spill over to
2021.
“Hundreds of civil servants still operate from rented
apartments at a huge cost to the government.
“The new secretariat, once completed in 2021, will
definitely go a long way to end this unhealthy trend
as well as provide a more conducive and decent
working environment for government workers,” the
statement added.
Ajakaiye added that Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq
has signed a constitutional instrument withdrawing
the allocation of plots of land 1, 3 and 5 to the firm.
He said that the said land used by Saraki family was
unlawfully appropriated contrary to the purpose for
which it was meant.
The spokesman added that the governor’s decision
followed a resolution of the State House of Assembly
urging him to reclaim the land because it was
arbitrarily taken over in the 1990s without any
evidence of payment by the company, even though
the land was meant for public use.
The governor noted in the revocation order that the
land was originally meant for the construction of
another phase of the Kwara State Civil Service
Secretariat and a parking space for both the civil
service clinic and the secretariat.
The revocation order according to NAN read: “In
exercise of the powers conferred by Section 5 of the
Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as
amended) 1999 and Section 1 and 28 of the Land
Use Act Cap. L.5 of 2004 and all other powers
enabling me in that behalf, I, Mallam AbdulRahman
AbdulRazaq, Governor of Kwara State of Nigeria, give
the following notice:
“The Notice may be cited as the Land Use
(Revocation of Right of Occupancy and withdrawal of
allocation) Notice, 2019.
“Allocation of plots of land 1, 3 and 5 TPS/MISC 129
to Asa Investment (Nig) Ltd. which is meant for the
Kwara State Secretariat.
“The land, specifically and more described in survey
No. KwSH 927 and Land/G1071 situated and lying
beside Civil Service Clinic on Ilofa Road Ilorin, Kwara
State, is hereby revoked and withdrawn for overriding
public interest for use of the purpose it is originally
meant for:
“The construction of Kwara State Secretariat; parking
space for civil service clinic and the Kwara State
Secretariat and annex to the Civil Service when
upgraded to a hospital.
“That the plots allocated are hereby declared void.
Notice is therefore given to you, Asa Investments
Nigeria Limited, that the plots of land 1, 3 and 5 TPS/
MISC 129 allocated to you and any title on the land
whatsoever are hereby revoked and the allocation is
withdrawn for overriding public interest,” it read in
part.

A Nigerian, Emmanuel Mong, caught trying to
catch a flight home, is in the process of being
extradited from Washington to Stamford in
California, where he will face charges that he
illegally intercepted a $30,000 wire transfer from
Purdue Pharma.
According to Port of Seattle Police, 24 year-old
Mong of Savannah, Georgia, was trying to catch
an Emirates Airlines flight to Nigeria on Dec. 16 at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Seeing there was a felony warrant in his name,
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers
detained him until police arrived at Sea-Tac
Airport.
According to the report, Stamford police issued a
warrant for Mong’s arrest in 2017, charging him
with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit
first-degree computer crime and conspiracy to
commit criminal impersonation, with a court-
ordered appearance bond of $250,000.
Despite his protests that he has never lived in
Georgia and claims that he is not the person
wanted in the warrant, Mong is being extradited to
Stamford.
His Stamford criminal defense attorney, Allan
Friedman, said Mong is eager to clear his name.
“Mr. Mong is looking forward to coming to
Stamford and having his day in court and
presenting evidence of his innocence,” Friedman
said. “We will resolve this matter in court.”
A spokesperson from Purdue Pharma said they
had no comment on the matter.
According to Mong’s four-page arrest affidavit,
Sean Coughlin, a Stamford police financial crimes
investigator, said Purdue Pharma became the
victim of what is known as a “man-in-the-email
scam,” wherein a corporation, usually with
business connections to Africa or Asia, have their
email systems hacked by a computer virus or
some other malware.

Group reinstates demand for Leah Sharibu’s release, after 674 days in Boko Haram captivity

The Para-Mallam Peace Foundation has
reinstated its demand for the unconditional
release of the kidnapped Christian schoolgirl,
Leah Sharibu, who has been in Boko Haram
captivity for 674 days.
In its Christmas message titled “Re: Leah
Sharibu – Christmas in Captivity 2,” the
Founder/Convener of the group, Revd Gideon
Para-Mallam, called on President Muhammadu
Buhari alongside all stakeholders for
concerted efforts toward her release and
others in Boko Haram’s captivity.
The statement reads in part: “Christmas is a
time of celebration but not for Leah Sharibu,
the courageous Christian girl who will
unfortunately be spending her second
Christmas in captivity.
“Christmas is a period for family reunion,
fellowship and celebration in Africa and indeed
around the world. People are right now
celebrating but not everyone can celebrate.
“How can Leah celebrate Christmas in
captivity? How can Leah’s parents celebrate?
How can those of us who yearn to see Leah
freed celebrate?
“Feelers indicate that the Nigerian Government
is trying but her efforts have so far fallen
short. Leah is still in captivity nearly two years
on. This is unacceptable with a government in
place.
Quoting Isaiah Chapter 9: verses 6-7 from the
Holy Bible, he added: “I urge all, that we rise
again and do more to see Leah freed from her
Boko Haram captors as we enter 2020.
“Let’s work for Leah’s freedom; along with
several others like Alice Ngaddah, a young
mother of two, GraceTuka, Bitrus Zakka
Bwallah and several unnamed others.
“The conscience of the world needs to be
roused once again to work in a tireless manner
to see Leah and others freed.
“Where is the AU, UN, EU and other global
agencies who care about humanity? With all
your combined efforts and those of global
leaders, I believe something positive can be
done.
“It is inconceivable how the Nigerian
Government keeps talking with little or no
results so far to convincingly show Nigerians
and the world that they are capable of bringing
Leah home to her parents.
“It’s up to the President to show this rather
than tell! Tough talking does not set captives
free. But smart and tough action does! Let’s
not give up and surely, we must not give in
also.
“Leah Sharibu as at today December 25th,
2019, you have spent 674 days in captivity. But
be encouraged, one day you will be set free by
the special grace of God. Your freedom will
surely come.”

BREAKING: Supreme Court upholds election of Governors Sanwo-Olu, Masari

The Supreme Court on Wednesday
affirmed the election of Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State
after dismissing two appeals
against his election.
In a decision by a seven-member
panel of the apex court on
Wednesday, the court said the
cases brought by the applicants did
not comply with the requirements
for such applications according to
Nigeria’s electoral law.
The court also ruled that the
allegation of non-compliance
brought against Mr Sanwo-Olu
were not substantiated.
“A petitioner has the freedom to
use his own language but should
know that he is taking a big risk,”
the court ruled.
“They were supposed to prove that
the noncompliance not only
existed but that it substantially
affected the result of the elections.
This they failed to do,” the apex
court ruled.
The court in a similar decision also
affirmed the election of Governor
Aminu Masari of Katsina State
after ruling that the application
challenging the legality of
documents submitted by Mr
Masari to the electoral umpire,
INEC, was unmeritorious.

Osoba: Nigerian Media must Rise against Hate Speech Bill

Sunday Ehigiator

A veteran journalist and former governor of Ogun State,
Chief Olusegun Osoba, has expressed fear over the
controversial Hate Speech Bill, which has passed the
second reading at the Senate.
Speaking at the launch of two books, ‘The Gatekeepers’, a
biographical work featuring 20 Nigerian editors,
columnists and media leaders, and ‘Nigerian Journalism:
160 Years of Advancing Accountability, Promoting the
Public Interest and Speaking Truth to Power’, published by
Posterity Media, in Lagos Tuesday, Chief Osoba charged
the media as the fourth estate of the realm to do all in its
power to sensitize the public and educate the legislators
on the pending dangers of such bill should it be passed
into law.
While ‘The Gatekeepers’, celebrates the inspiring
contributions of editors to democracy and public
accountability, ‘Nigerian Journalism’, a series of essays
and articles by renowned Nigerian journalists and
stakeholders, proffers ideas and insights on how to
improve journalism practice in Nigeria and sub-Saharan
Africa.
According to him, “The challenge I want to place before
all of you is the bill before the Senate. I read in the papers
that the Senate President said the bill will not scale
through, but it has now passed second reading.
“Passing second reading means it would go to the
committee, while the committee would call for public
hearing. Now the challenge before all of you is that, now
that the bill is with committee, we should not just sit down
and write columns or editorials, each one of us must sit
down and write a paper on why the hate bill must not
pass.
“We must make the presentation to the committee. Not
only that, as many of you that would be able to go to
Abuja on the day set for the public hearing, make your
presence felt, and explain to the committee the dangers
of allowing such a bill to pass.
“I must admit to you that we are being embarrassed by
bloggers and social media practitioners. Nobody grounded
in journalism would say that what they are doing is right.
And I would not want to defend the impunity and
blackmail these people do on social media, I will not be
part of it. And the very sad part is that, they are not
journalists nor trained in this profession. And they do not
operate under the code of conducts of journalism practice
all over the world.
“But our challenge as journalists and even myself is to
appear before the Senate committee when they call for
public hearing, and express the dangers in passing the
social media bill and hate speech bills into law.
“Secondly, I want to appeal to you, that we should all
invade social media. All of us as trained journalists must
use all our online platforms and invade the social media
to give credible news and investigative journalism, which
is the kind of news we should be more focused on. That
way, we would begin to change the negative impression of
social media overtime, and also create good alternative
for readers and overtime, they would lose interest in fake
news.”
Speaking on the books, the author, Femi Kolawole, said
the books were as a result of his belief that “journalists
and especially editors, who act as media gatekeepers,
deserve to be recognized and applauded for their tireless
jobs in ensuring that Nigeria becomes a country that
offers hope and limitless opportunities to its people.
“‘The Gatekeepers Volume 2’, is a biography work on 20
Nigerian editors, columnists and media leaders and their
inspiring contributions to good governance and
democracy”.
Some of the editors featured in the books include Mr.
Mike Awoyinfa, veteran newspaper chief and former MD/
Editor-in-Chief, The Sun; Mr. Dare Babarinsa, Editor-in-
Chief, Gaskia Media Limited; Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi,
Chairman, THISDAY Editorial Board; Mr. Gbenga Omotoso,
